Users Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
