Each time a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
