RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages leading to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
